What IS Functional Medicine?

You may be wondering, what exactly is Functional Medicine and how can this be applied to the perinatal period? Functional medicine is a personalized, systems-based approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease rather than merely treating symptoms. By looking at the body as an interconnected whole, Functional Medicine practitioners consider the complex interactions between genetics, environment, and lifestyle that can influence long-term health.

This approach involves a thorough deep dive into a patient’s history to create a tailored treatment plan. The goal is to promote optimal wellness by restoring balance and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal. Often integrating nutrition, exercise, and stress management to achieve lasting results. Functional medicine empowers patients to take control of their health by working in harmony with their bodies, rather than against them.

Functional medicine offers a comprehensive approach to supporting women throughout the perinatal period. Addressing their specific needs during conception, pregnancy, and postpartum. This approach focuses on optimizing overall health by identifying and addressing underlying imbalances that may affect fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and postpartum recovery. Functional Medicine practitioners provide personalized care that considers factors like hormone levels, nutrition, gut health, and stress to support a woman’s body during this critical time. This holistic approach empowers women to thrive through every phase of their perinatal journey.

Dr. Leigh, PT, DPT, IFMCP

My journey into Functional Medicine began after dealing with frustrating postpartum symptoms that conventional medicine deemed as “normal”. This experience led me to pursue a certification in Functional Medicine, allowing me to uncover and address the root causes of my symptoms while taking a deeper dive into my health. By focusing on nutrition, proper exercise, and lifestyle adjustments, I was able to balance my hormones and truly heal my body.

I joined the OPT for Mama team to share my knowledge of Functional Medicine with other women facing similar challenges like chronic fatigue, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, and more. I’m thrilled to be a part of this team and to offer holistic care throughout the perinatal journey; whether you are trying to conceive, pregnant or navigating postpartum.
